Discovering the old tastes @ a more than Two Decades old Miao Yi ...

With the current trend of going Haute Vegetarian Cuisine or Organic Cuisine, yet there are vegetarian restaurants that still serve traditional vegetarian food.  Trying to preserving the Traditional Vegetarian Food Culture heritage that would otherwise gradually fade from existence ...

Situated in the luxurious residential estates of Bukit Timah district, this 22 years old vegetarian restaurant at Coronation Plaza maintains an old-world charm and even carnivores are happy to visit them for the old tastes of Traditional Chinese Vegetarian Cuisines at a very reasonable prices (Service Charge: NO, GST:YES).

We were to attend a talk near Coronation Plaza and our initial plan was to have dinner at Miao Yi. Due to its opening time is from 6pm and we figured out we might not have sufficient time to really savour their dishes, therefore we postponed the dinner date.

How can I miss the opportunity of not having something from this restaurant where so many reviewers rave about it.  Hence, I went and I dined alone! Shocked to see the restaurant was 60% full within 5-10 minutes after its opening hour at 6pm. By 6.30pm, it was 90% full, look like tables on weekend evenings are almost impossible to get, so reservation is a must!
Claypot Hor Fun @ $7
Chrysanthemum tea was priced at @ $1 for a whole pot
The noodle dishes priced from $5 but Claypot Hor Fun @ $7 was what I had. Tasted like authentic Zi Char Hor Fun without meat.  No mock meat for this dish at all. There were vegetables, mushrooms and Yam instead. The Chrysanthemum tea was priced at @ $1 for a whole pot.  Comparing to other vegetarian cuisine in other vegetarian restaurants in Singapore, I would think each of them have their own unique feature and selling point, thus allowing diners with more choices and catering to different tastes.

Dining alone, I could only peek at other tables' dinner happily enjoying the Vegtarian Peking Duck, Ginger Rice and ... So, must go with family or friends, so you can try more of their delectable dishes ...

Where: 587 Bukit Timah Road Coronation Shopping Plaza #03-01/02. Singapore 269707. Tel: 64671331.

The ginger rice is fantastic but I just can't cook it the way it taste, do you know how to cook that taste similar?

The peking duck is also very fantastic and I like the sauce very much.

I also dine alone before and keep looking at others too. hahahaha

Hi Anonymous

I haven't tasted their ginger rice yet, so not too sure. I had use ginger and sesame oil to do ginger fried rice, i like it. Ginger with sesame oil added to cook rice taste good too, if you like these ingredients.

I will try it next time :)

The peking duck, at least 2 table ordering it, i saw the same dish "walk" past me, the lettuce was so fresh and a lot, so tempting. Must put it in my must-try list. Thanks for the info.

Cheers :D

Hi Sunny :)
You are right.

Very big crowd at the restaurant and my friends expect the place for talk to fill up very fast (big crowd), so we wanted to be at the place by 7pm, it would be a rush if we didn't change plan.

Cheers :D

We tried the ginger rice today! Tasted very much like the chicken rice and the kids love it but in my opinion the rice grains are not dry enough, maybe we are one of the 1st few customers hence the flavour not totally blend in yet.

I originally wanted to order the Peking duck that you mentioned but the waitress informed us that the Peking Duck on menu is not like the meat version but sweet & sour gluten. The only resemblence to meaty Peking Duck would be what they called the vegetarian suckling pig instead.
We ordered & it tasted great though abit expensive at $35 for M & $50 for L.
However, the other dishes are quite reasonally priced at $20+ for L.
It was an satisfying meal we had there.:)

Hi J

Thanks so much for the lovely info. If it tastes like Chicken Rice, then it could be ginger with sesame oil and seasoning used in cooking the rice.

Fried the ginger in sesame oil and add to the rice in the cooker. Salt and seasoning (optional) added.

Will try that out next time.

Cheers :D
